The setting of large agribusiness complexes
The case of territorial systems involved in the production of coffee in Brazil
Keywords:
urban territorial systems, agribusiness, coffee, BrazilAbstract
Researchers and public administration officers from different countries have focused on rural territorial systems as an essential field of study dealing with the sustainable development of regions which have important trade and agro-industrial complexes. In Brazil, this relatively recent academic, political and administrative view has been reinforced since the 1990s. The effects of such systems on architecture and the environment shaped by this kind of complexes have been studied. Sao Paulo’s coffee complex has particularly become both a research object and a transdisciplinary field. Global economy changes and high-performance Brazilian agriculture influence are reflected on territorial systems involved in Brazilian coffee production which, in turn, has a dynamics that encourages significant changes and gives rise to specialized space subsystem adjustments. This can be found not only in rural territorial systems but also in urban systems developed in agricultural regions.
