The following interview introduces the view of the Brazilian architect Angelo Bucci as regards the practice of the architectural profession. It is based on his involvement with other disciplines’ discourses and their relationship with both the tradition of modern architecture in Latin America and Brazil’s culture and history which were marked by the military dictatorship and the restoration of democracy in the late 1980s. In the face of these scenarios, Bucci contrasts the characteristic phenomena of the globalized world with their effects on the project conception. The Brazilian Pavilion’s project for the Expo Sevilla 92 provided the first step leading to the international recognition of Bucci’s production which, in turn, was later developed in the SPBR studio. It became a turning point for Brazilian contemporary architecture that enabled the translation of the typical canonical Carioca and Paulista modernism’s lessons (use of pilotis, open floor plans, etc.) into foreign contexts.
