Based on the plan developed by the German Brazilian architect Philipp Lohbauer for Santa Cruz de la Sierra (1959-1960), this article focuses on a series of intersections between urban planning theories and experiences circulating in South America between the late 19th and mid-20th centuries which remain understudied in the historiography of architecture and urbanism. It highlights the confluence of national and international geopolitical interests responsible for the city's rise to a regional economic center. This was also reflected in the influx of companies and professionals from diverse countries and fields who were involved in the process that resulted in the plan characterizing the Bolivian city. Drawing on institutional archives and a literature review, the text establishes unprecedented relationships between agents, companies, and institutions, contributing to filling a historiographical gap in a case of great importance to South American urbanism.
