Abstract

In this conversation, Abel Perles reviews the trajectory and exponential transformation of Productora since its beginnings in 2006, based on events relevant to the studio.
It explores the founding of the studio, its cosmopolitan atmosphere, and its awareness of being an emerging actor in a new generation of architects. The team's participation in international awards and the early and immediate recognition of the quality of their work. The invitation to architectural contests and the possibility of carrying out important works in Mexico and abroad.  The meaning of the name of the office and the project, conceptual, formal and material concerns linked to the production of works, together with a strong interest in disseminating and promoting architecture and the discussions that take place in and from Latin America, are part of this conversation.
And the reflection on Productora as a name that anticipates a "Latin American" way of doing things. One that takes place between the obvious, the intelligent, the necessary, the uncomfortable, the informal and the uncertain.

Author Biographies

Abel Perles, PRODUCTORA, México

Es arquitecto por la Universidad de Buenos Aires (1999) y socio del estudio de arquitectura PRODUCTORA (México, 2006). Los trabajos de PRODUCTORA fueron presentados en la Bienal de Arquitectura de Beijing (2006), Venecia (2008, 2012, 2018) y Chicago (2015, 2017), en el Museo de Arte Nacional de China (Beijing) y en el Museo Victoria & Albert en Londres (Reino Unido). PRODUCTORA ha recibido el reconocimiento de Architectural League en Nueva York con el Young Architects Forum (2007) y Emerging Voices (2013). En 2016 obtuvo el Premio MCHAP (Mies Crown Hall Americas Prize) Emerging Architecture con la Obra Pabellón en el Zócalo. El Centro Cultural Teopanzolco, un proyecto realizado en asociación con Isaac Broid, recibió el American Architecture Prize en Arquitectura Cultural (2017), premio Oscar Niemeyer 2018, y el Primer Premio Internacional en la Bienal de Arquitectura de Quito 2018. Entre las muchas publicaciones de la oficina destacan su primera monografía de Arquine (2010) y la monografía 2G (n°69) en 2014. Los socios de PRODUCTORA han participado activamente de la enseñanza de arquitectura en México y los Estados Unidos. En universidades locales como la Universidad Iberoamericana, el Centro de Diseño, el TEC de Monterrey y la Universidad La Salle, y han impartido estudios en UCLA (Los Angeles), IIT (Chicago) y Harvard GSD (Cambridge).

Horacio Torrent, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Chile

Arquitecto (UNR, 1985. Magíster en Arquitectura (PUC.Chile, 2001). Doctor en Arquitectura (UNR, 2006). Profesor, investigador, historiador y crítico de arquitectura. Sus investigaciones sobre los inicios de la arquitectura moderna y la cultura arquitectónica chilena y latinoamericana son de referencia y han sido publicadas en libros, revistas nacionales e internacionales. Profesor Titular de la Universidad Nacional del Litoral (1990-1997). Investigador del CIUNR (1990-2002). Director del CURDIUR (1990 y 1994). Actualmente, Profesor Titular de la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. Profesor invitado a programas de postgrado en diferentes universidades en Venezuela, Brasil, México, Argentina, entre otras. Reconocido con el Premio de Investigación en la Bienal Iberoamericana de Arquitectura y Urbanismo, 2006. Miembro de la Society of Architectural Historians, de la Red Latinoamericana Hábitat Moderno y del Executive Committee y del Advisory Board de Docomomo International. Coordinador del Grupo Latinoamericano de la European Architectural History Network y Presidente de Docomomo Chile.
