Abstract

In my opinion, the essence of architecture lies in the “to be or not to be” duality which Eastern culture emphasizes in the etymology of the word “void” (wu – to be / you – not to be). Throughout history we can see that while some architectural works are envisaged from the prevailing view of the “full”, others are grounded on that of the “empty” as a positive composition feature.
However, whether one case or the other, it is the architect’s graphic representation that plays a key role when emphasizing either of them. In particular, I refer to initial sketches or conceptual diagrams which are not intended to represent constructive facts but reflection frameworks as parts of the design process. I deal mainly with the art of poché and its use before and after Beaux Arts teaching -even in contemporary architectural works- and how this technique enables the architect to have a different space-envision approach.
