Abstract

Charles Édouard Jeanneret travelled to the Middle East in May 1911, it was one of the many trips he took throughout his life. This long-awaited dream was envisaged as the conclusion of his studies as a young man. In spite of its unique nature, Le Corbusier often recognized this trip as a determining influence. This was due to not only the way in which his observations were employed but also the particular use of images that -through their constant updating, reinterpretation, interplay and reinvention- led to the uniqueness of this experience. Le Corbusier reused his ‘memories’ as constitutive features of his creative process of reformulation. They became ‘useful’ material assets for his patient search. This article reflects on the relationship between the description carried out during his visit and the transcription as project reprocessing, in particular reference to the way in which Le Corbusier employed the “Pompeian fragments” he brought from the Middle East.
